Cardinal Zen is arrested by CCP, will HK Catholic anti-Gay campaigns continue?
The arrest of Cardinal Zen from a Gay perspective.
The media isn’t considering all the human rights issues involved, in particular the Gay issues. The fact is that the Catholic Church in Hong Kong is an enemy of Gays and don’t believe in human rights either.
(Cardinal Zen, Joseph Zen, was Coadjutor Bishop of Hong Kong 1996-2002, Cardinal in 2006)
Before we get drawn into the chorus of lamentations over this or any other human rights issue, we need to ask these three questions.
Did they support human rights?
Did they support human rights for Gays?
Is their complaint that they are being treated the way they would treat Gays?
The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong has quite a lot of articles on homosexuality on their webpage which you can find at this link.

The Hong Kong Catholic hierarchy is vicious in its attacks on Gays.
This article is behind a paywall, but it is reported on by the Washington Blade the link to which follows this link.

In this article Cardinal Zen’s evasive reply is mentioned, but he isn’t speaking against the Hong Kong Catholic church continuing campaign against Gays.
Cardinal Zen’s career as bishop of Hong Kong, ended in 2002 before the modern Hong Kong Gay movement was a presence so there isn’t a record mentioning him on this issue, but you can see what type of organization he created by observing the anti-Gay contemporary Hong Kong Catholic church.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) isn’t a friend of Gays either. However, the CCP doesn’t seem to permit Christian homophobic campaigns either.
With the CCP take over of Hong Kong there is repression of Gay rights also. Pro-Beijing forces attacked a popular TV show with Gay characters.

Our view of this matter should be that one anti-Gay organization CCP has damaged another even more anti-Gay organization.
The liberal/left is oblivious to the issue of Gay rights as shown in this article.
A crack down on Christians in Hong Kong probably squashes a major homophobic force in Hong Kong. Also, the CCP isn’t inherently anti-Gay, though it is currently repressive, it hasn’t always been so and it very well might change in the future. Christians on the other hand have been aggressively anti-Gay for over 20 centuries. Despite all the theological contortions of the Gay Christians, murderous anti-Gay hostility is built into Christianity as revealed by their actions.
However, the possibilities of a better future for Gays in CCP China is largely speculative. If Christians aren’t repressed in China, they will likely take up campaigning against Gays. They can’t now because of the CCP.
This arrest of Zen isn’t like a victory for Gays. There are three major take aways.
1. Catholics have no moral basis for complaints about Cardinal Zen’s arrest. They seek to persecute Gays and now find themselves persecuted.
2. Likely the Catholic church in Hong Kong won’t be able to launch anti-Gay campaigns as they did before.
3. The influence of the leading anti-Gay organization in the world has been diminished.
By the way, this is the Wikipedia article, and is the result of when you have liberals who really don’t care about Gay rights write the narrative.
Wikipedia praises him about being a human rights hero, but not comment about the Hong Kong Catholic churches campaign against Gays and his position regarding Gays.

An article about the colonial aspects of the Catholic Church in Hong Kong and their anti-Gay attitudes.
An extra item I thought of, but not directly related to issue discussed here.
This movie is about a Gay Chinese student at a local anti-Gay Christian school.
