The Texas law requiring age verifications has been allowed to go into effect.
It is in the details of Age Verification that apps will likely shutdown. I don’t know how the law will work with VPNs and even if discussing VPNs might result in my arrest. So don’t talk about VPNs in the comments.

Note in the ArsTechnica article, “impacts the privacy of users by requiring the collection of sensitive, personally identifiable information to download any app.”
The article also discusses that the law is difficult for apps to comply with and that they can be prosecuted, even if they were attempting to comply in good faith.

There is an effort to get a national law for the app stores.
“Beginning January 1, 2026, a new state law in Texas—SB2420—introduces age assurance requirements for app marketplaces and developers,” Apple said yesterday in a post for developers. “While we share the goal of strengthening kids’ online safety, we are concerned that SB2420 impacts the privacy of users by requiring the collection of sensitive, personally identifiable information to download any app, even if a user simply wants to check the weather or sports scores.”
Bluesky shutdown in Mississippi because they didn’t have the resources to comply with the new law there.
